Components of Carbon Steel Barn Door Hardware

Track: A metal bar mounted above the door opening. Your door will be hung from this.

Rollers: little wheels mounted on the track to allow the door to move smoothly. You'll need at least two for a single standard-sized door.

Hangers: Small metal plates that attach the door to the rollers.

Door guides: Tiny wall-like metal pieces mounted to the floor to prevent the door from swinging.

Stops: Barriers mounted at both ends of the rail on the floor to keep the door from sliding off the track.

Jump blocks: Round (sometimes square) pieces of plastic or metal mounted on top of the door to keep it from “jumping” off the track.

Standoffs (sometimes called spacers): Tube-like pieces mounted behind the door track to prevent the door from scraping against the wall.

Connectors: Metal plates used to connect tracks together for particularly long doors. Depending on the dimensions of your door, you may not need these.

Bypass brackets: L-shaped brackets that mount to the wall and hang over the inner track to hold a second track. These are only used for bypass double-door styles.

Sliding Door Kits for Wooden Doors

Carbon Carbon Steel Barn Door Hardware in 4 Easy Steps

Step 1

Using a stud finder and a level, hang the mounting board on the wall studs. I used 3″wood screws to attach it and made sure I place a screw on every stud. The mounting board offers extra support (remember you'll be hanging a super heavy door on it) and makes the process easier. Having the board also allowed me to leave the existing door casing. A definite plus!

Step 2

Once the board is up, it's a good idea to paint it. Painting around the hardware, is a pain. Trust me :). I painted mine black to match the hardware. You could also paint it the same color as the wall, like I did in my son's room.Once the paint is dry, rest the metal rail above the mounting board and make pencil marks on the 1×4 that line up with the predrilled holes on the rail. Once all are marked, drill pilot holes in those places. Use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the screws that come with the kit.

Step 3

Once the board is up on the wall you're ready to hang the metal rail. Get yourself a helper if you can. It's possible to do it solo, but can be frustrating. And since you'll likely be standing on a ladder you should be safe.Drill pilot holes in the center of the circles you drew, using a drill bit that slightly smaller than the nut screws that comes with the kit. Once the holes are drilled, place a spacer with the flat side facing the mounting board, follow with the metal rail, then the washer and screw. Tighten with the nut driver.

Step 4

Remember, it is critical that you hang this level. Otherwise, your door will slide unwanted. Give it a check as you install each spacer. There's a little wiggle room at first.can be intimidating. Follow the step by step instructions ahead to hang sliding door hardware onto wooden studs on regular drywall. You can do it!

Maintenance Tips for Carbon Steel Barn Door Hardware

Regular Cleaning

Dust, dirt, and debris can accumulate on barn door hardware, causing it to wear down over time. Regular cleaning can help prevent this. To clean your barn door hardware, you’ll need a soft cloth, warm water, and mild soap. Start by wiping down the hardware with a dry cloth to remove any loose dust or dirt. Then, dip the cloth in the soapy water and wring out the excess. Wipe down the hardware with the damp cloth, being sure to get into all the crevices. Finally, rinse the hardware with a clean, damp cloth and dry it thoroughly.

Lubrication

Over time, barn door hardware can become stiff or difficult to move. Lubrication can help prevent this. There are several types of lubricants that can be used, including silicone spray, WD-40, and white lithium grease. To lubricate your barn door hardware, start by cleaning it as described above. Then, apply a small amount of lubricant to the rollers, hinges, or any other moving parts. Be careful not to apply too much, as this can attract dust and debris. Move the door back and forth a few times to distribute the lubricant evenly.

Inspection and Repair

Regular inspections can help catch any issues with your barn door hardware before they become major problems. During an inspection, look for signs of wear, damage, or rust. If you notice any issues, make the necessary repairs or replacements as soon as possible. For example, if you notice that the rollers are worn down, replace them before they cause damage to the rail.
